People can do a lot to support each other, but they dont
always recognize that. It can be as simple as listening and then helping an at-risk woman
or an abusive man to link to resources in their community.
Dr. Peter Jaffe
Academic Director, Centre for Education and Research on Violence Against Women and Children
Faculty of Education, University of Western Ontario
In the majority of cases there were several risk factors that family, friends or co-workers
could have identified. Had they understood the significance of what they were seeing, they might have been
able to inform the person who became the victim of the risk or they may have been able to intervene
with the abusive man.
We want to change public attitudes so that everybody, whether a friend, neighbour or a family doctor,
will look at this issue differently and respond.
Deb Matthews
Minister Responsible for Women's Issues
“Domestic violence is not a private matter. We all have a role in stopping woman abuse. The Neighbours, Friends and Families campaign teaches us what to do to help. This campaign will help save lives.”
Madeleine Meilleur
Minister of Community and Social Services Minister Responsible for Francophone Affairs
“I encourage everyone to learn more about the program Neighbours, Friends and Families. Understanding the warning signs is an important first step in helping women who are abused or at risk. Knowing what to do and taking action when you see the signs is critical. It is encouraging to see that more than 140 communities across the province have joined the campaign since it was first launched in 2006.”
